Newsletter for 1/4/04: Host prices
Hello,

Firstly I would like to start with wishing everyone a happy new year.

Are you looking for hosting? Are you looking to get a package cheap? How cheap is too cheap? When a hosts prices are too cheap they start to make you wonder if you are getting the quality you want. You start to ask are they cutting corners to charge these prices.
Overselling; this is a bit corner to cut. It basically means that the server is not powerful to host the amount of sites it is hosting.
Hosts do this hoping that their customers will not use 100% of what they have allocated.
This is probably true but how much is OK to oversell.
Discussions over at webhostingtalk seem to come up with about 30% as an idea. This means that the hosts sell 30% more than they can provide, i.e. they only have 100GB bandwidth and they offer 5GB to say 25 clients.
This is a common pitfall for the unexpected thinking they are getting a good deal when they are only getting a drop in quality.

Are the hosts you are looking at resellers? This means that although they may have fancy pictures of big datacenters, they only rent one server there and are re-selling the server for the real company.
There shouldn't be a problem with this unless the reseller has no experience and I am not trying to discourage anyone. The purpose of these newsletters are to help you make the right disicion
Don't judge a host from their website. Sure it may have fancy flash and all the rest but that is nothing to do with them as a host and can make them look tacky.
All hosts no-adays seem to pick up the latest flash template from templates r us and seem to think it wins customers and it does but not intelligent ones.
I hope this article helps you to choose a host that is right for you and feel free to get help in our forums.

Many apologies but we no longer offer free hosted forums. We received a great many applicants and never had the time to process all these and setup their boards.
